“CODA” CO-STAR EUGENIO DERBEZ SIDELINED WITH UNUSUAL INJURY

Eugenio Derbez, a Mexican actor and comedian well known on both sides of the border, will be taking an unplanned leave of absence from the entertainment world. According to his wife Alessandra Rosaldo, a popular actress, singer and dancer, Derbez broke his shoulder while playing a virtual reality game with his son Vadhir.

“My husband is fine, but he will need to have a very delicate surgery,” posted Rosaldo in Spanish on Instagram. “The recovery process will be long and difficult, and will require weeks of rehabilitation therapy.”

Derbez reportedly fell while wearing a virtual reality helmet, breaking his shoulder in several places. The timing was unfortunate for Eugenio, riding high after his role in the Oscar winning film “CODA.” In addition, he has also appeared in successful productions like “Instructions Not Included,” plus “How to be a Latin Lover” and the HBO flick, “Acapulco.” He also has 25 years experience as a director, a skill that might come in handy while he slowly recuperates.

The 61 year old Derbez has appeared in nearly 50 productions, in both English and Spanish. The Mexico City native is known for comedy sitcoms, his bread and butter south of the border. That said, Hollywood and the film industry has been kind to him. In Adam Sandler’s hit movie “Jack and Jill,” Derbez co-starred with an all-star cast that included Standler, Katie Holmes and Al Pacino. “Instructions Not Included” was a box office bonanza in 2013, earning over $100 million. And for “CODA,” Derbez earned the Screen Actors Guild Award For Outstanding Performance.

In 2016, Eugenio Derbez was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
